Herbert Tobias (1924-1982) was a German photographer active from the 50s through the late 70s who straddled the line between art and pornography in a way reminiscent of Mapplethorpe’s later work. He was renound for capturing the essence and vulnerability of his subjects. He became one of the first high profile AIDS fatalities in West Germany.
