In this article we present a dynamic writer with some dynamic advice which, if followed con- scientiously, can change your entire personality and make of you a virtual powerhouse of energy. dynamos' in the business and social world who are neither physically fit nor healthy. However, these individuals seldom last very long. Frequently they desintegrate physically or mentally or both. Some end up in mental institutions and other in hospitals and still others cash in their chips for keeps at an early age. Needless to say anyone who lives at a high pitch constantly will soon wear himself out. In many ways it is similar to run- ning a motor at full speed without any let-up. The human machinery like the mechanical machinery eventually reaches a point where it breaks down and either functions poorly or ceases to function en- tirely. It is for this reason that health and phys- leal fitness are of prime importance to the 'hu- man dynamo'. You can be a powerhouse of ener gy without these phys- ical attributes but you won't be one for very long. First and foremost therefore, get yourself into the best possible physical condition. Follow regular scientific systems of exer- cising such as you find in the pages of this magazine. Take care of your diet and see that you get sufficient sleep to meet the demands of your body. And, above all learn to relax at will. The matter of relaxation is of extreme importance. Like the pauses between heat beats, the pauses between bursts of energy, constitute the much needed periods of repair and recuperation which make it possible for you to give additional bursts of energy without impairing your human machinery. When you feel that your body is fully conditioned to satisfactor ly handle unlimited outbursts of energy then you can begin to take steps to develop yourself into a 'human dynamo". Positive thinking is perhaps the first step. By positive thinking we mean thinking from which has been banished all doubts, indecisions, apprehensions, fears, submissive- ness and timidity. Never let a negative thought enter your mind. Banish the words 'no', 'can't', 'per- haps', 'maybe etc. from your vocabulary. Read about your favorite stars at work and at play. DON'T LOOK NOW, but that big fellow standing over in the cor- ner, and whom you never saw before, might be the next Mr. America! It could happen, you know, and this re porter will tell you why. The other day, Joe Weider and Barton Horvath made a visit to the Weider Jersey City Warehouse. While they were there a tall, husky looking, colored chap came in. He was dressed very neatly, and politely asked for a Krusher Grip Set. One was brought out to him and he looked it over. He took it into his hands to test its strength, and while the Weider Krusher Grips are made of high quality tension steel, and more than a match for most men, this man squeezed it together as though it was made of paper. A bit puzzled, he asked if there wasn't perhaps a stronger set he could buy? It was then that Joe Weider and Barton Horvath took in- terest in him. Noting his powerful ap- pearance they asked him if he had ever trained before. The answer was no. They asked if he did heavy work for a living. The answer was still no. Then Joe Weider asked him if he would mind showing his upper arm. Muscle-Tone AND Fresh Air By DR. HEREWARD CARRINGTON • Amost interesting health-talk for the benefit of those seek- ing greater vitality and mus- cle-quality. Your Editor posed him while Cliff Jury look the picture. TOO often we overlook the fact that muscles in themselves have no strength-that is, unless they are activated by life. It is the vital power back of them which makes them "strong" Take the muscles in the leg of a rabbit. Try and pull its leg out straight, when the animal is alive, and you will find an enormous amount of resistance. But after the animal is dead, you can shread its muscles in your fingers. So, big muscles are really strong because they permit a greater amount of life-force to flow through them. The vital power is that which counts, though muscles are necessary to express this inner power. There is still another factor which we must take into con- sideration-a point too often neglected. This is what is known as "muscle-tone." We generally speak of two types of people; the weak and the strong. The former are flabby, technically known as "asthenic," while the latter are firm, or "sthenic." The muscular figures of Michelangelo are often of- fered as the epitome of the hypertonic strong man, while the foam-born Aphrodite represents the sthenic, consumptive type. The former are typically masculine, while the latter is feminine. Good muscle-tone should not, however, be limited only to the striped, skeletal muscles, but should extend also to the smooth internal musculature. Hence the necessity of strength- ening the internal organs, the ligaments supporting them and the muscles surrounding them. In persons of advanced age we often find fairly strong muscles combined with flabby relaxation of the stomach and bowels. The muscle-tone has not been maintained in these vital areas. Hence the muscles about the waist-line play an important part in all true hygienic exercises, and big biceps alone will not serve to prevent in- ternal disorders later in life, if these inner organs are neg lected. General constitutional exercises are thus necessary, having in mind not only the external muscles, but those involving the internal organs as well. If these are strengthened, great vital power is present, and such a man resists disease, lives on a high plane of vitality, and often lives longer than a more powerfully built man who has neglected this all-im- portant factor. Certain breathing and Yoga exercises will do much to strengthen these internal structures, which ordinary exercises will not affect so directly. Hence the value of com- 24

THERE are numerous exercises for the triceps, and most barbell trainees have tried them all. But, in the arrangement of their training regime, they often revert to exercises that are most to their liking and neglect the special movements that really would pro- duce quick results. I refer now to the triceps, that muscle behind the upper arm which is so essential for lifting power and for coordination with the pectorals and deltoids during those lifts. When you have full curved triceps, you also have much more measurement to your upper arm, for the triceps is a larger muscle than the biceps. And no matter how well developed your biceps may be, you will still lack girth until your triceps are built up to prominence. And the best way to develop these muscles is to specialize on one certain exercise and keep everlastingly at this movement until your tricep curve pleases you and you own the power to press much heavier poundages. The old fashioned two arm standing overhead press with a barbell is a good movement for the triceps as well as the shoulders and trapezius; but to place more direct play upon the triceps, I advise you to do this. overhead pressing movement while sitting down. This will compel more pressure upon the arms and lessen the coordination of many other muscles that would be used when standing. And, while you are seated upon a chair or bench, make sure that you sit erect before you start the first overhead press with your barbell. And keep sitting in that erect posture throughout each rep. You should do all the reps you can with a fairly heavy weight, but never do more than 20, rather add another small plate even if this cuts your reps down to ten for a while. Soon you will increase your arm and shoulder strength and again work up to 15 to 20 reps. You also should do from five to eight sets of this movement that is, if you wish to specialize and quickly develop those triceps. This sitting down over- head pressing movement is about the finest you can do for tricep curve, and after you have stuck to it for a month or so, you will agree with me, for you will notice quite a difference in the back of your arms, especially when you look at them when bent, for it will be then that the curve of your triceps will be better appreciated. Height makes no difference to these remarkable equilibrists and they can perform their stunt upon almost hazardous elevations.
During each and every count or rep when per- forming this exercise, you should concentrate strongly upon your triceps. As you press the bar- bell upwards, think about how your triceps are working and of all the effort these muscles are expending during the upward push. When the bell reaches overhead, let it fall back to shoulder height with gravity, take a deep breath, and then press it. upwards again, and so on until you cannot possibly do another movement. This will complete your first set. Repeat such movements for four more sets, at least. To add variation to this pressing for the triceps, it might be advisable for you to alternate the return of the bell to shoulder height, by allowing, during one set, to let the har come behind your neck and then do your full number of reps in that manner. By pressing from behind the neck, you will derive even greater tricep effort, and it is this added effort that further helps your tricep development. In other words, I suggest that you do the first set with the bar starting from your upper chest, and then do the second set with the bar starting from behind your neck. You can do three front sets and two back sets and get the most beneficial tricep training. If you do less than five sets, you will not be special- izing on the particular triceps muscle, but will simply be going through your regular training routine. You can specialize with any body. part like this, but as this brief article happens to be on the triceps, I am devoting more words to that musele. Because I advocate this back of neck and front overhead pressing. it does not necessarily indicate that you should stick to this exercise for too long a period. I believe in changing around the training as you go along, but you would do well to give this concentrating special exercise at least two months' trial, if you really need more fullness behind your upper arm, for I have done this same work myself, whenever I needed special conditioning for public posing in an im- mediate future. I have found that just a few workouts on such specialization bring up the muscles to their best appearance. And, of course, even if you fortunately own fine triceps, this suggestion will get them even better. Then, there is the pull-over and press while lying on your back on a bench and this is also a fine tricep developer and an exercise that can be placed into the specialization order; but the pull-over movement will not "blow-up" your triceps as much as will the behind- the-neck press, as you will find out after you have adopted it for a (Continued on Page 44) 21
E VERYONE needs help, especially a beginner. A fellow will join my Health Club and appear somewhat lost amid the lor of husky muscle-boys training there daily. He may feel that he never can get like them-he is too slim, or too far, as the case may be. Only when I explain to him that each and every one of the other fellows began just as he is beginning. They thought the same thoughts as he thinks. Each felt that he was too slim, too weak, or too out of shape to ever mold his body into splendid proportions, so I simply have to quietly tell the same story to each beginner-"You see all these husky chaps? Once they were just like you-beginners, bur constant training has made them what they are, and some day you will be the same way." That seems to awaken en- couragement in anyone. And it is the truth. All must start sometime. None is born with powerful muscles. Each has to follow practically the same routine-work, work and work, as I systematically outline it for him. True, this takes time. Inspiration OTHERS by BERT GOODRICH Study photographs, watch well-built men train, and you will acquire much help. No one can accomplish a miracle. But, after a few months, every beginner has something good to show from expended efforts. Then his encouragement increases by leaps and bounds. By training near or with fellows who have large muscles and who can lift very heavy weights in many repetitions, will offer greater impetus and stimulation than anything else. If one cannot have access to a gymnasium, but is forced to work- out at home, then I advise the studying of photographs. Hang them all over the walls. Look at them constantly and derive added enthusiasm by seeing the developments you admire and may presently lack. By constantly studying the pictures of well-developed athletes will furnish a goal towards which to strive. If there were no clothing styles, how much would you or I bother about dressing in the latest attire? We might decide Bert Goodrich, the dynamic west coast promoter of "Mr. U. S. But style and society prompt a brush-up in our personal appearance. Or, put it another way-suppose you lived alone, far from all civiliza- tion-you might not even bother cutting your hair; but because you live among people who do get hair- cuts, you also want to look presentable as well as they. Likewise with your body. By seeing others who are well set-up and who own well-shaped muscles and who have strength, it prompts you to try what they used to get that way. In plain words, you and all of us need some sort of an incentive. We must have ideals as well. as ideas, and we should have natural desire to better ourselves in every possible way. And if there seems to be an avenue whereon we can go and secure a little more than the other fellow, surely everyone with a grain of ambition will want to traverse that road. To remain stationary means stagnation, but to forge ahead means a life filled with gratification. LOS ANGELES 19491 Milton Lippmana Woodbury College sta dent, bolds the AA.A. trophy awarded him on January 8th, 1949, and which places bim spon the pedestal of fame. He is 21 years old, stands 5 ft. 10 in.. and weighs 196 lbs. Some of his measurements are neck 16%, chest 48 expanded, waist 32, thighs 2415, and calves 16 inches. ON THE night of Jannary 8th, 1949, the A.A.U. staged another splendid show at the Embassy The- atre in Los Angeles, California. Eighteen contestants, each owning a prize winning body, lined the stage, after their individual posing routines, for the judges and for a house filled with wildly enthusiastic spec- tators. And Milton Lippman won! Here is a 21 year old athlete who willbear watching in future events. His splendidly proportioned 196 lbs. of muscles are worthy of even higher honors. His 5 ft. 10 in. of height, his 16½ neck, 48 expanded chest, 16½ in. biceps, 32 waist, 24½ thighs and 16½ calves, Gary Brundage (left), second place winner, and Pepper Gomez (right), third place winner in the Mr. Los Angeles contest. But he was placed third, much to his own, and to the amazement of his host of friends. And Gary Brundage, the famous heavyweight lifter of California, got second honors! But smiling Milton Lippman, a dark horse, so to speak, obviously proved to be a little better than all the rest, and the realization of this was proved when Steve Reeves was called upon to award the first prize trophy. Milton, besides being a barbell enthusiast, is a won- derful hand-balancer. He can perform a sure one-hand stand on almost anything, and his numerous stunts in two-hand balancing are noteworthy. In addition, he is an all round athlete. His favorite barbell work is the prone press at which he hopes to make a record of some kind. His life is a busy one. Between his college studies which take considerable time, he devotes three periods each week to body-building and in each work- out, all his muscles get a thorough "going over" and thus reveals his success both as a student and a physique prize winner. If the Greek idea of proportions are considered, here is a fellow with arms, neck and calves measuring the same size-16½ inches. And as to the contour and shape of his muscles, they are full, with pleasing curves, yet have room for greater definition, which Milton is after. done is 180 pounds by Wally Marcyan. He's capable of more, too and the record should go up considerably. As an acrobatic feat the "get-up" is done in many different styles. When you have worked up with barbells to the point where you are ready to try with buman weight, secure a partner of light bodyweight to start with and have him hold the tucked position... that is with his hands clasped tightly around his knees. Now reach under one arm and grasp the other arm at the armpit. It will be easy to get the right starting position if you will sit on the mat side by side and then assume the position described and proceed as with a barbell. This style was used by Adolph Nordquest and Otis Lambert. Nordquest was a heavyweight and Lambert a middleweight. They could do the trick with either man on top; for Lambert this was a really herculean feat of strength and skill. If you like this combination of lifting and acrobatic work you can work on the more difficult forms of the "get-up." First, there is the one where you place your hand at the small of your partner's back while he, or she, arches back in a graceful "swan": More difficult will be the following version... At this stage you have nearly completed the job, but pref- but a final effort remains so don't let up! Either knee may be brought up. erably the left one so that the left hand may be placed on the left knee to assist in the effort of arising. Another interesting stunt is the two arm "Get-Up" with barbell. To my knowledge no official records exist on this lift, nevertheless some amaz- ing unofficial marks have been hung up. Not so long ago Al Motter succeeded with 190 pounds. a very creditable performance for a man who is only a middleweight and a light one at that. Jack LaLanne is reported to have done well over 200 pounds and this is quite believable for Jack is really a terrific all around strong-man as well as the envied possessor of one of the world's most outstanding physiques. Many readers will be surprised to learn that south- ern Calif. boasts a man who, a few years ago, succeed- ed with the hard to believe amount of 265 pounds in the one arm get-up! That's an awful load of iron, I know, but Johnny is a lot of man, too. Yes, he's Johnny Collins of Long Beach, well known as an adagio performer and a man who has taught dozens of our professional as well as amateur acrobats at "Muscle Beach." I've seen Johnny do a one arm lift with a man of more than 200 pounds then get down and back up. many times. He supports two people at one arm's length as casually as you or I might a sack of flour. AROUND HOLLYWOOD WITH YOUR EDITOR Let's Gossip Mac Batchelor turning left-banded... seems that Big Mac has become arm weary from wrist-wrestling so many who challenge him nearly every day, so now he is taking on all comers with his left arm only. But, between you and me, this gives Mac an advantage, because most people are right-handed, and if required to switch without much notice to left hand wrist- wrestling, they will find it a handicap, whereas Mac is ambidextrous, and with as much powr in the left as in the right. Maybe he's smart, too! George Eiferman finally came back to Hollywood. They all do, no matter what sort of itching feet they might get and depart for distant places. George looks just the same all his lumps still remain his prize possessions. Nice guy, too. Always ready for a smile or a kind word- and what a sense of humor! Vic Nicoletti who has been studying for a degree in Physical Educa- tion, finally obtained it and is now a full fledged teacher. And I know that he will make a good one. He got his first appointment as director of a playground at Venice, California, and by the time this reaches print, he probably will be at some school for the Board of Education ...That's the way Yours Truly started off years ago. Didja know that I used to be with the Board of Education? Well I wuz. Don't judge by my Hollywood Liedermanese. Sorry to have observed that colossal conceit also prevails among some of the pro wrestlers especially those up-starts who have only been in the game a couple of years. This, of course, does not prevail among those who are known as "dirty wrestlers" for those guys are really tough and all men, but some of these "handsome" types, become so saturated with ego that it actually oozes our of them when in the ring, so much so, that they border on the realm of "pretty boys." He was discovered by that camera wizard Al Urban who encouraged Goodrich to enter and win Mr. N.Y.C. title In 39 and Mr. America the same year. He is also wearing the same trunks when he doubled for Welsmuller and Buster Crabs In the “Tarzan” movies.
